This session will explain what depression is and what the differences with normal ageing are. The high rates of depression will be outlined and the differences in older people’s depression will be considered. Issues of under reporting, diagnosis and treatment will be covered. The increased risk of physical illness on getting depression and conversely the increased impact of depression on physical outcomes will be described. Common treatments, including physical, social and psychological will be explored.
